Collector’s Netsuke

The art of Netsuke began as a practical fashion accessory. Worn on the obi, or sash, the netsuke was a functional button used to secure a purse at the hip.   As time went by, these carvings became more elaborate, and various materials like ivory, bone, horn and wood were employed.  As the art of Netsuke matured, the subject matter broadened to include all aspects of Japanese life, from nature, to crafts, social interactions and religious experience, through spiritual and mythical creatures.  The best Netsuke are characterized by fine craftsmanship and appropriate choice of materials, but a whimsical touch is always appreciated!

The special collection of netsuke illustrated below represents just a few of the fine pieces available at Iwasawa Oriental Arts.  For more information on a particular Netsuke, Please click on an image.
