Translation: Dokusho Geki Ken (Read books like striking swords). Literal meaning is " Attack your studies with vigor." This is a personal motto for someone who was both scholarly and energetic. The piece was most likely commissioned becausse of the owner's strong beliefs in both civil and martial virtues.
